Richard Eurich

Richard Ernst Eurich was born on 14 March 1903 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, the son of a German-born physician and bacteriologist and a Yorkshire Quaker mother. He attended Bradford Grammar School before studying at Bradford School of Art from around 1922 to 1924, then continuing his training at the Slade School of Fine Art in London under Professor Henry Tonks, from roughly 1924 to 1926.

He held his first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery, London, in 1929, and went on to show annually at the Redfern Gallery through the 1930s and 1940s. During the Second World War he served as an Official War Artist to the Admiralty, painting scenes of ships and coastal action. His painting Withdrawal from Dunkirk was exhibited at the National Gallery in 1940 and brought him wide recognition. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1942, a full Royal Academician in 1953, and a Senior Royal Academician in 1978, and he exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition almost every year from 1937 to 1993.

Later in his career he showed at Tooth and Sons in London through the early 1970s, at The Fine Art Society in 1977, 1983, and 1991, and at Agnew's in 1985 and 1988. He was appointed OBE in 1984 and received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Bradford in 1989. His last major exhibition in his lifetime, Richard Eurich: from Dunkirk to D-Day, brought together nearly 40 of his war paintings at the Imperial War Museum in 1991.
