Rita Ackermann

Rita Ackermann was born on April 19, 1968, in Budapest, Hungary. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest from 1989 to 1992, working with the painter Karoly Klimo, before immigrating to New York in 1992 to continue her studies at The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, supported by the Hanes Family Foundation, through 1993, immersing herself in the city's underground art and music scenes.

Her early work, shown in her first New York solo exhibition at Andrea Rosen Gallery in 1994, drew on adolescent girls, fairy tale imagery, and a rough, diaristic figuration that critics associated with the downtown scene of the period.
