Robert Falk

Robert Rafailovich Falk was born in Moscow on 15 October 1886. He trained in the private studios of Konstantin Yuon, Ivan Dudin, and Ilya Mashkov around 1903 to 1905, then studied formally at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from 1905 to 1909 under Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov.

Falk became one of the founders and most active members of Jack of Diamonds (Bubnovy Valet), the Moscow group whose exhibitions introduced a jarring, color-driven modernism to Russian painting. After the 1917 revolution he taught at VKhUTEMAS, the State Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops, from 1918 to 1928, eventually heading its painting department. In 1928 the People's Commissariat for Education sent him to Paris to study the classical heritage in painting, and he remained there until 1938, developing a more subdued, tonal approach to color.

He returned to Moscow in 1938, a dangerous period in Soviet history, and worked for the rest of his life largely out of public view, exhibiting rarely in the postwar years. Robert Falk died in Moscow on 1 October 1958. His reputation was restored posthumously, with a mid 1960s Moscow exhibition often cited as a turning point, and the New Tretyakov Gallery has since mounted a retrospective tracing his career from his early work through his final Moscow years; exact dates for these later exhibitions are not consistently documented in available sources.
