Romulo Galicano

Romulo Noel Galicano was born on February 4, 1945, in Carcar, Cebu, in the Philippines. As a high school student at Carcar Academy, where he graduated in 1964, he did decorative and lettering work and spent time in the studios of the Abellana family, absorbing technique from the painter Martino Abellana, his uncle, and the sculptors Ramon and Sindulfo Abellana. From 1961 to 1965 he received private art lessons from Martino Abellana in landscape and figure painting.

In 1965 Galicano moved to Manila, where sources describe him taking up fine arts studies, most consistently at the University of the East under the abstract painter Florencio Concepcion, though at least one account instead names Far Eastern University; no source confirms that he completed a degree. From 1968 he pursued full-time training in painting under Sofronio Y. Mendoza, and between 1969 and 1975 he painted alongside the Dimasalang group of artists and writers, a circle Mendoza helped found.
