Ruud van Empel

Ruud van Empel was born on 21 November 1958 in Breda, the Netherlands. He studied graphic design at the Academie St. Joost in Breda from 1976 to 1981, graduating in 1981 and receiving the school's Sint Joost Award the same year. Through the 1980s he worked in television design and commercial graphic design and videography before shifting his practice toward photography and, later, digital image construction.

Van Empel became known for a labor-intensive process in which he photographs individual elements, leaves, flowers, skin, clothing, and figures, then digitally composites them into single, seamless images, most often portraits of children placed inside lush, artificial Edenic landscapes. He has exhibited internationally at institutions including George Eastman House (now George Eastman Museum) in Rochester, New York, and received the Charlotte Kohler Award (1993), the H.N. Werkman Award (2001), the Breda Oeuvre Award from his home municipality (2013), and an Artist of the Year honor from the American Friends of Museums in Israel in New York (2017). He lives and works in Amsterdam and continues to exhibit internationally, with recent and upcoming solo shows including Galerie Fontana in Brussels (2026), the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego (2025), and the Musee de la Photographie in Charleroi (2026).

Danziger Gallery has described Van Empel as one of the pioneers and leading artists of the digital photographic medium, building his figures as hybrids assembled from hundreds of diverse fragments taken from his own photography rather than a single exposure. Phillips has similarly described him as having formulated a distinctive collage technique that runs throughout his photographic body of work.
