Sam Taylor-Johnson

Samantha Louise Taylor-Wood was born on 4 March 1967 in London, England, and grew up in South London. After secondary education, she attended Goldsmiths College, University of London, where she studied art. In the 1990s, she emerged as part of the Young British Artists movement, gaining early recognition for photography and moving-image work that often featured portraiture and cinematic framing. Her gallery practice centered on large-scale photographs and video installations, frequently exploring themes of desire, celebrity, and psychological intensity.

She exhibited internationally throughout the 1990s and 2000s, with White Cube serving as her primary gallery. Her works entered major museum collections including Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Walker Art Center. On 21 June 2012, she married British actor Aaron Johnson. Following their marriage, both changed their surname to Taylor-Johnson, and she has since been professionally credited as Sam Taylor-Johnson.

In 2009, she directed her feature film debut, Nowhere Boy, a biopic of John Lennon's childhood. She has since directed Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), Fifty Shades Darker (2017), and Back to Black (2024), while continuing to exhibit visual work. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2011 Birthday Honours for services to the arts. She lives and works in England.
