Sanlang Yang

Yang San-lang was born on 5 October 1907 in the Taipei area of Japanese Taiwan; sources give his birth district as either Yonghe or Wangxi. In his mid-teens he traveled to Japan to study painting; sources differ on the school, naming either the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts or the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, before he transferred in 1924 to the Western Painting Division of the Kansai Arts Institute, where he studied under Kuroda Shigetaro and Tanaka Zennosuke. Sources differ on the exact year he completed this training, giving either 1928 or 1929.

Back in Taiwan, he entered the government-sponsored Taiwan Art Exhibition and Taiwan Exhibition, winning a Special Selection Award in 1927 and first prize for best painting in 1929. Around 1931 to 1932 he traveled to France, where he studied European painting directly in the museums of Paris; his work Along the Seine was selected for the Paris Salon in 1932. In 1934 he was among the founders of the Taiyang Art Association, one of Taiwan's longest-running painting societies, and remained closely involved with Taiwan's official juried exhibition system in later years.

Major retrospective exhibitions followed later in his career, including Fifty Years of Studying Art at the Provincial Museum in 1973 and a retrospective of his paintings at the National Museum of History in Taipei in 1983. He received a Special National Art Award in 1986 and, in his later years, Taiwan's National Cultural Medal.
