Sanya Kantarovsky

Sanya Kantarovsky was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1982 and emigrated to New York City with his family at around age ten, where he continues to live and work, now based in Upstate New York. He earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004, completed a residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2008, and earned an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2011.

Kantarovsky's practice centers on painting but extends into sculpture, animation, printmaking, and curatorial projects. His paintings are typically described as populated by figures in states of status anxiety or existential crisis, rendered with a wry, unsettling humor and a narrative sensibility that critics have called "unearthly." A comprehensive monograph, No Joke, was co-published by Studio Voltaire and Koenig Books in 2016.

His institutional profile grew through a series of solo museum and Kunsthalle projects, including a solo presentation at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin (2017 to 2018), a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel (2018), and A Solid House at the Aspen Art Museum (2022). In 2026 he is presenting Basic Failure, a solo exhibition at the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti in the Palazzo Loredan, Venice, timed to the Venice Art Biennale. He shows through Capitain Petzel, Modern Art, and Taka Ishii Gallery, and has also held a solo exhibition with Luhring Augustine in New York.

Kantarovsky's reception has centered on the tension in his paintings between an appealing, even seductive surface and darker undercurrents of anxiety and dislocation. His work has been grouped with a broader wave of contemporary figurative painting, including inclusion in Radical Figures: Painting in the New Millennium at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, in 2020, and in The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin at the Jewish Museum, New York, in 2017. Commentary on his practice has repeatedly described him as a painter's painter, someone deeply committed to the material and historical procedures of the medium.
