Sarah Ball

Sarah Ball was born in 1965 in South Yorkshire, England. She studied at Newport Art College in Wales from 1983 to 1986, then, after a gap of nearly two decades, returned to formal art education and completed an MFA in Fine Art at Bath Spa University in 2005. She now lives and works in West Cornwall, near Penzance, with a studio in St Ives.

Ball's paintings are small- to medium-scale portraits built from found source material, including police and immigration archives, newspaper photographs, and social media images, rather than sittings with live subjects. The work centers on identity, gender, and anonymity: faces rendered with great technical precision but stripped of context, so that a viewer is left to project a narrative onto a person they cannot otherwise place. She built a steady exhibition record through the 2010s in the UK, including selection for the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in 2013, 2016, 2018, and 2019, and shortlisting for the Columbia Threadneedle Prize in 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
