Sarah Cunningham

Sarah Cunningham was born in Nottingham, England, in 1993 and grew up in the Wollaton area of the city. She trained at New College Nottingham before completing a BA in Fine Art at Loughborough University from 2012 to 2015. In 2019 she received the Ali H. Alkazzi Scholarship Award and the Djanogly Art Award, which supported her MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London, completed in 2022.

Her paintings built abstracted, layered compositions drawn from forests and the natural world, worked in a gestural style that critics and galleries described as hypnotic and immersive. She had her first solo exhibition in the United States, In Its Daybreak, Rising, at Almine Rech in New York in 2022. In July 2023 she joined the roster of Lisson Gallery, which presented her first solo show with the gallery, The Crystal Forest, in London later that year, followed by a second solo exhibition, Flight Paths, at Lisson Gallery's Los Angeles space in 2024.

Cunningham was reported missing by Lisson Gallery in early November 2024. She had last been seen in the early hours of 2 November in Camden, London. Police were called to Chalk Farm Underground station shortly after 1 a.m. on 4 November, where a body on the tracks was later confirmed to be hers. An inquest at Poplar Coroner's Court, reported in April 2025, concluded that she had entered the tracks in the early hours of the morning and was struck by a train roughly eighteen minutes later, ruling the death accidental and noting that she was intoxicated at the time. She was 31. Lisson Gallery's statement named her parents, Eddie and Sue Cunningham, and her brother, Anthony Cunningham, as survivors.

Cunningham was named to the Artsy Vanguard for 2023 to 2024 and was profiled by Sotheby's Magazine as part of a new generation of London painters reworking landscape and nature through abstraction. Press coverage consistently framed her ascent as unusually fast: an RCA degree in 2022, a New York solo with Almine Rech the same year, representation by Lisson Gallery in 2023, and solo shows in London and Los Angeles within two years. Her sudden death drew wide tribute across British and international art press, which described her, in the weeks that followed, as one of the most promising young voices in British painting. Nottingham Contemporary's announcement of a first institutional solo exhibition, opening in 2026, has been treated by the trade press as confirmation of that critical standing continuing after her death.

Cunningham's secondary market is small and recent, drawn mostly from sales beginning in 2021. Her recorded auction high is Moonlight Reflecting Petals, which sold for USD 120,650 against a USD 20,000 to 30,000 estimate at Phillips New York on 18 May 2023. Other documented results include Folding In Is A Kind Of Fading Out, which made USD 60,480 in a Christie's charity sale benefiting L'Alliance New York, and Lunar Phase, which marked her auction debut in Asia at a Phillips Hong Kong sale. Additional works, including Siren, Mother Wound, and Banana Plant, appear in Phillips' auction summary for the artist, though exact sale venues and dates for each are not fully documented. With only a handful of public lots on record and her studio production now closed, her market remains thin, and the announced Nottingham Contemporary retrospective, running 2026 to 2027, is likely to be an important test of continued demand.

Cunningham's public auction history consists of a small number of documented lots, so any individual sale can move the picture of her market considerably and should be weighed against that limited sample rather than read as a stable trend. No catalogue raisonne exists, a function of how brief her career was, and current verification of her work runs through Lisson Gallery and her estate.
