Why Sasha Gordon matters
Sasha Gordon is one of the fastest-rising figurative painters of her generation, an artist still in her twenties whose hyperrealistic, psychologically charged self-portraits have moved from a 2021 Los Angeles debut to co-representation by David Zwirner and Matthew Brown and a growing list of major museum collections. For a collector, she is a case study in how quickly institutional validation can arrive for an emerging painter, and how thin and volatile the auction record for that same painter can still be.

Biography
Sasha Gordon was born in 1998 in Somers, New York, to a Polish Jewish American father and a Korean immigrant mother, and she now lives and works in Brooklyn. She entered the Rhode Island School of Design in 2016 to study painting, and completed her degree there; sources vary on whether it was a BFA or a BA, and galleries and museums that represent or have exhibited her give her graduation year as either 2020 or 2021, with the public record not resolving either discrepancy.
Gordon paints hyperrealistic, often unsettling self-portraits in which surrogate versions of herself appear doubled, distorted, or entangled with animal and monstrous forms. The work engages identity, self-image, racism, misogyny, homophobia, and the male gaze, using her own likeness as the recurring subject. Her first solo exhibition, Enters Thief, opened at Matthew Brown in Los Angeles in 2021, followed by Hands of Others at Jeffrey Deitch, New York, in 2022, and The Flesh Disappears, But Continues to Ache at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London, in 2023. Surrogate Self, her first solo museum exhibition, opened at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, in December 2023 and ran through March 2024. In 2024, David Zwirner announced its representation of Gordon in collaboration with Matthew Brown, and in September 2025 she opened Haze, her first solo exhibition with David Zwirner in New York. In 2025 RISD gave her its Emerging Leader Award.
Critical reception
Art press has consistently framed Gordon as one of the most closely watched young painters working today, citing her rapid move from a 2021 gallery debut to museum and institutional recognition within a few years. Artsy included her in its 2022 Vanguard list of emerging artists. Critics have focused on her use of hyperrealism to stage discomfort: her surrogate selves are painted with a technical precision that makes their distortions, doublings, and monstrous transformations feel physically plausible, which writers have connected to her exploration of racialized and gendered ways of being seen. Her placement in major public collections while still in her twenties, including the Whitney, the Hammer, LACMA, and the Dallas Museum of Art, has been widely cited as evidence of an unusually fast institutional embrace for an artist this early in her career.
Market
Gordon's auction history is short but has moved sharply higher in a compressed period. Her current record is Gone Fishing (2019), an oil on canvas that sold for USD 214,200 at Christie's New York in the 21st Century Evening Sale on 21 November 2024. The following day, Empath sold for USD 119,700 at Christie's New York. Reporting on the Gone Fishing sale noted that it substantially exceeded her prior auction high, an untitled 2021 work that had sold for USD 38,000 in an online sale in June 2021, an increase reported at roughly 400 percent over roughly three and a half years. No public auction result after November 2024 has been documented at a higher price as of this writing.

What collectors should know
Gordon is an early-career artist, and her market reflects that: only a small number of works have come to auction, and the jump from a USD 38,000 result in 2021 to a USD 214,200 result in 2024 illustrates how quickly and unevenly prices can move on thin supply. There is no catalogue raisonne, so provenance and verification run through her representing galleries, David Zwirner and Matthew Brown, rather than through a published scholarly record. Her institutional footprint, eight major museum collections and a first solo museum show at ICA Miami by age 25, is the strongest signal of long-term durability, but collectors should treat any single auction price as a snapshot of a market that is still being established rather than a settled trend.
