Why Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar matters
Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar is a French-Iranian painter whose scraped-paint canvases, made using a technique he calls peinture raclee, have moved from gallery and hospitality commissions into the international auction room. His market is still young and thin, anchored by a single standout auction result in 2023, but his profile has been built through representation by a multi-city European gallery, site-specific commissions for luxury hospitality collections, and sustained press coverage of his practice and Iranian-French identity. For a collector, he is an early-stage case study: strong press and gallery momentum set against a limited public sales record.

Biography
Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar was born in 1984 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris, to a French-Iranian family. He spent part of his childhood in Iran before moving to Dubai to study at the American University in Dubai, and later earned an MBA from the International University of Monaco. He developed peinture raclee, a technique built from scraping and layering oil paint, which became his signature method for large abstract canvases exploring energy, life force, and spiritual themes.
He and his wife, Maria, have also set up an art gallery in Monte-Carlo, Monaco. He lived for extended periods in the south of France, and around 2024 he relocated his practice and family to Doha, Qatar, while continuing to exhibit in Europe.
Critical reception
Coverage of Behnam-Bakhtiar has come primarily from lifestyle and art-market press rather than academic criticism. Sotheby's published a feature profile, "Seeking the Truth Within: Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar," and he has also been profiled by Harper's Bazaar Arabia, LUX Magazine, and Esquire Middle East, generally in the context of his studio practice in the south of France, his move to Doha, and his advocacy for Iranian contemporary art. The recurring framing treats his scraped-paint canvases as an attempt to visualize energy, healing, and spiritual transformation, and situates the work at the intersection of his French upbringing and Iranian heritage. No outlet has produced the kind of sustained museum scholarship that surrounds more established figures, and no verbatim critical assessment could be confirmed for direct citation here.
Market
Behnam-Bakhtiar's public auction history is short and concentrated in 2023. His painting Age of Energy sold for GBP 101,600, about USD 122,000, at a Phillips sale in London in 2023, a result Phillips described as a new auction record for the artist; the exact sale date is not independently confirmed. Two other works, Sparks of Life and Nothing But Energy, have also sold at Phillips for GBP 50,400 and GBP 45,360 respectively, both above their pre-sale estimates, though it is not confirmed whether these sales took place in the same auction as the Age of Energy record. No later sale has been documented at a higher level than the Age of Energy result. He is represented by SETAREH Gallery, with locations in Berlin, Dusseldorf, and London, which has staged multiple solo exhibitions with him since 2024, including a 2026 show in London.

Authentication and provenance
No catalogue raisonne.
No catalogue raisonne has been published and no certificate of authenticity program is documented. Works are sold primarily through SETAREH Gallery and select auction houses, and the research available could not confirm a formal verification protocol beyond ordinary gallery and auction house due diligence.

What collectors should know
Collectors should treat Behnam-Bakhtiar as an early-stage market. His entire public auction record centers on a small handful of lots sold at Phillips in 2023, so the GBP 101,600 record for Age of Energy is a single strong data point rather than an established trend line. There is no catalogue raisonne and no documented certificate of authenticity program, so buyers should rely on gallery and auction house provenance and, where possible, direct confirmation from SETAREH Gallery, his current representative. His institutional footprint so far consists of site-specific and hospitality placements, such as Patina Maldives and the Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar, rather than acquisitions by major public art museums, which is worth weighing against the strength of his gallery program and growing exhibition calendar.
