Artist

Scott Kahn

American, b. 1946

Painting · Drawing

Scott Kahn is a case study in a market built almost entirely in the last five years, after decades of comparatively little recognition. A painter of saturated, dream-like landscapes and solitary figures drawn from memory, he was rediscovered largely through social media in his seventies, then moved quickly into major institutional and gallery company, culminating in representation by David Zwirner and inclusion in museum collections including the Long Museum in China. For a collector, he represents both the appeal and the risk of a market driven by a sudden, well-publicized rediscovery rather than a long, steady auction history.

Scott Kahn was born in 1946 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He earned a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, studied in 1968 under Theodoros Stamos in the Stamos class at the Art Students League of New York, and completed an MFA at Rutgers University in 1970. He spent much of his career as a working but little-known painter, supported at points by an artist residency at the Edward F. Albee Foundation in Montauk (1975 to 1977) and by Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants in 1986 and 1995.

His public profile changed markedly starting around 2019, when a wider audience began to encounter his work through Instagram and a series of sold-out gallery shows, including exhibitions with Nicelle Beauchene Gallery and Harper's Books in 2019 and with Almine Rech in Paris and New York in 2021 and 2022. In 2024, David Zwirner announced representation of Kahn and presented Once in a Blue Moon at its Hong Kong space, his first solo exhibition in Asia. A solo exhibition at David Zwirner's New York gallery is scheduled to open on 10 September 2026. Kahn lives in New Rochelle, New York, and works from a studio in Brooklyn.

No verified verbatim critic quotes from named critics at major outlets were available for this profile. In institutional and gallery language, Kahn is consistently described as a painter of enigmatic, dream-like landscapes and portraits that blend real and imagined elements, built from memory and personal history. His work has been included in group presentations at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (2022) and the Consortium Museum, Dijon, France (2023), alongside gallery solo shows that have driven both critical attention and auction demand.

Kahn's auction market is recent and concentrated in Asia. His current auction high is Big House, Homage to America (2012), which sold for HKD 11,250,000 (about USD 1.43 million) at Christie's Hong Kong on 26 May 2022, a result Christie's describes as the artist's world auction record. It surpassed an earlier high of USD 961,286 for Cadman Plaza at Phillips Hong Kong on 30 November 2021. The span of roughly six months between that first major result and the current record illustrates how recently and quickly this market has formed.

Kahn's market is young: his highest recorded sales date only to 2021 and 2022, both in Hong Kong, and there is no confirmed catalogue raisonne to anchor provenance research. Museum placements in China, at ICA Miami, and at his alma mater the University of Pennsylvania lend institutional credibility, and his move to David Zwirner in 2024 is a significant validation. Collectors should treat individual auction results with caution given how few high-value sales exist and how recently the market for his work has formed.
