Why Sebastien Bourdon matters
Sebastien Bourdon was one of twelve founding members of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris in 1648, and he later served as court painter to Queen Christina of Sweden in Stockholm from 1652 to 1654, two of the highest institutional distinctions available to a French painter of his era. Nearly four centuries later, his paintings remain in the permanent collections of the Louvre, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, the National Gallery in London, the Hermitage, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. For a collector, he represents a well-documented Old Master name whose historical importance is not in question, even though his auction market is thin and largely below six figures.

Biography
Sebastien Bourdon was born on 2 February 1616 in Montpellier, France, to a Protestant family; his father worked as a painter on glass and a glazier. Bourdon was apprenticed to a painter in Paris from about age seven to fourteen, roughly 1623 to 1630, and afterward worked in Bordeaux and Toulouse before traveling to Rome around 1634. There he studied the paintings of Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, and Caravaggio, developing an unusual facility for imitating other painters, and he returned to Paris around 1637 to 1638.
In 1648 he was named one of the first twelve academicians of the newly founded Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. As a Protestant in a period of religious tension in France, he traveled to Sweden and served as court painter to Queen Christina in Stockholm from 1652 to 1654, producing several portraits of her. He later returned to Paris, where in 1654 he was named rector of the Academie Royale. Bourdon died on 8 May 1671 in Paris and was buried in the Protestant cemetery of the faubourg Saint-Germain, near the rue des Saints-Peres; that cemetery no longer survives.
He should not be confused with a living contemporary artist who has used a similar name and the alias "Whatshisname." The auction-market and museum-collection Sebastien Bourdon is exclusively the French Baroque painter and engraver who lived from 1616 to 1671.
Critical reception
Reference sources consistently describe Bourdon as one of the more versatile French painters of the seventeenth century, valued for history and religious subjects, Poussin-influenced landscape, portraiture, and caricature. The French art historian Rene Guilly has been paraphrased in several biographical sources as ranking him among the most brilliant and highly regarded French painters of his century, though no outlet in the available research supplies an exact, attributable quotation from Guilly that can be reproduced verbatim. Institutional descriptions from the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery in London similarly frame him as a major, if now less widely exhibited, French Baroque figure whose reputation rests on his range across genres rather than on a single signature subject.
Market
Bourdon's documented auction high is La Deposition de la Croix (The Descent from the Cross), which sold for USD 281,000 at Sotheby's in New York in 2014, the only six-figure dollar result identified for the artist. Other documented results sit well below that figure: Adoration of the Magi realized EUR 102,000 at Les Andelys Encheres in France, and Soldiers Playing Cards realized EUR 9,760 at Lempertz in Germany. Auction houses including Dorotheum have also offered lots catalogued only as "circle of Sebastien Bourdon," meaning not accepted as fully autograph, though the research consulted for this profile did not confirm a specific price or sale date for such a lot. General market pricing for his work has been reported to range roughly from EUR 2,000 to EUR 220,000 depending on subject, quality, condition, and attribution.

Authentication and provenance
No catalogue raisonne.
No published catalogue raisonne exists for Bourdon. Attribution rests on scholarly connoisseurship and curatorial research at institutions such as the Louvre and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, and auction listings frequently qualify lots as circle of or attributed to rather than fully autograph.

What collectors should know
There is no published catalogue raisonne for Bourdon, so attribution depends on scholarly connoisseurship and the curatorial judgment of institutions such as the Louvre and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza; buyers should expect to see qualifiers such as "circle of" or "attributed to" on a meaningful share of market material. Public sales are infrequent and concentrated in the European Old Master trade, with results that vary widely by subject and condition, and no dated, citable exhibition history of temporary shows was located beyond his standing presence in major permanent collections. Given the thin sales record, any single auction result, including the 2014 high, should be read as a data point rather than a stable market trend.
