Shan-Yueh Kuan

Guan Shanyue was born on 25 October 1912 in Yangjiang, Guangdong province, China. According to Baidu Baike, he studied at a village private school from 1918 and at a junior-level middle school from 1920, before graduating in 1933 from the Guangzhou Municipal Teachers Training College, an institution some English-language sources, including Artnet, refer to as the Guangzhou College of Education.

After 1949 he taught for many years and became a leading representative of the Lingnan School of Chinese painting, known for his depictions of mist-shrouded mountain landscapes. He served as vice-president of the Chinese Artists Association and as president of the Guangdong Studio of Painting. In 1959 he collaborated on works for the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, and in 1979 a further painting of his, reproduced as a poster, was added to the Great Hall of the People.

The Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen, financed and built by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, had its foundation laid in January 1995 and opened officially on 25 June 1997.
