Shanti Dave

Shanti Dave was born on 25 September 1931 in the village of Badpura in northern Gujarat, India. Raised in a family of limited means, he moved to Ahmedabad as a young man and supported himself by painting signboards and film billboards before pursuing formal art training.

He enrolled at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, completing his undergraduate studies in painting from 1950 to 1956 and a post-graduate diploma from 1956 to 1958. He studied under N. S. Bendre.

Dave won the Lalit Kala Akademi's national award in three consecutive years in the late 1950s, commonly cited as 1956 to 1958, though some sources give 1957 to 1959. He went on to develop his best-known technical signature, encaustic, a wax-based medium combined with oil, built up into paintings in high relief. He completed major public mural commissions for Air India offices, including a VIP lounge mural at a New York airport. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1985 and the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award in 1986, and received the Lalit Kala Ratna Puraskar from the Lalit Kala Akademi, though the exact year of that award is not documented in available sources.

Multiple current sources, including DAG and Art & Beyond, describe Dave in the present tense and state that he lives and works in New Delhi. No death has been documented in newspapers, gallery statements, or auction-house records as of mid-2026. A single, uncorroborated social media post claiming a 2008 death date is not supported by any institutional, gallery, or press source and appears to be inaccurate.

Dave's reputation rests on his standing as one of the earliest Indian painters to build a mature, personal abstraction, and specifically on his pioneering use of encaustic. Harper's Bazaar India described him in 2023 as India's first significant abstractionist to incorporate beeswax into his practice. His institutional standing, three national awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi, a Padma Shri, and inclusion in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art and several international museums, has anchored a critical consensus that treats him as a foundational rather than transitional figure in Indian modernism.

Dave's market reset its high-water mark in 2026. Untitled (1971) sold for GBP 254,000 (about USD 340,000) at Christie's London on 11 June 2026, more than ten times its low estimate and a rise of about 59 percent over his previous record.
