Shen Zhou

Shen Zhou was born in 1427 into a wealthy scholar-gentry family in Xiangcheng, near Suzhou, in Jiangsu province, China. His family's standing, built in part on landholding and tax administration, freed him from the need to earn an official post. After the death of his father, he chose to forgo the imperial civil-service examinations in order to care for his widowed mother, and devoted his life instead to painting, poetry, and calligraphy.

His artistic development is generally described through the styles he absorbed rather than through named teachers or institutions. He is said to have followed the Yuan painter Wang Meng before the age of forty, then turned to the styles of Huang Gongwang and Wu Zhen. He became the central figure of what came to be called the Wu School, based in Suzhou, and his student Wen Zhengming carried the tradition forward after him.
