Shim Moon Seup

South Korean, b. 1943

Sculpture · Painting

Shim Moon Seup is a foundational figure of postwar Korean sculpture, a member of the A.G. Group (Korean Avant-Garde Association, active 1969 to 1975) that helped define Korea's experimental art of that era. He has built a durable institutional record, including a retrospective at Korea's National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and current representation by Perrotin and Tang Contemporary Art, culminating in a 2026 solo presentation in Venice timed to the Biennale. For collectors, he is a case study in an artist whose museum and gallery standing runs well ahead of a still-thin public auction record, a gap that itself deserves attention rather than assumption.

Shim Moon Seup was born in 1943 in Tongyeong, on Korea's southern coast, and earned a BFA in sculpture from Seoul National University in 1965. He came of age as part of the A.G. Group, the Korean Avant-Garde Association active from 1969 to 1975, and by the early 1970s his work was already appearing at the National Art Exhibition of the Republic of Korea, where he won awards in 1969, 1970, and 1971.

His practice centers on sculpture in wood and stone that treats nature, weathering, and time as subject matter, alongside a recurring painting series titled The Presentation. In 1981 he received the Excellence Prize at the 2nd Henry Moore Grand Prize Exhibition in Japan. In 2007 he became the first Korean artist invited by the French Ministry of Culture to exhibit in the Jardin du Palais-Royal in Paris, and the same year France named him a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Korea's National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has also staged a retrospective of his work at its Gwacheon site, though the exact year of that retrospective is not confirmed in current sources. According to Perrotin, he continues to live and work between Tongyeong, South Korea, and Paris, France; recent exhibition activity through mid-2026, including a solo presentation in Venice, is consistent with that account, and no obituary or gallery death notice has been identified.

Institutional recognition of Shim Moon Seup has built steadily rather than through a single breakout moment. Korean national exhibition awards in the late 1960s and early 1970s recognized him at home, and his role in the A.G. Group placed him within Korea's pivotal postwar avant-garde. A retrospective at Korea's National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and his continuing representation by Perrotin and Tang Contemporary Art have reinforced his standing as a historically significant figure in Korean postwar sculpture. No verbatim critical assessments from named critics in major outlets could be confirmed in current research, so none are quoted here.

Shim Moon Seup's market sits mostly outside the international auction spotlight. Auction databases place roughly 118 to 146 of his works on record at auction, figures that vary by source, and the clearest documented result located is a 2015 painting from The Presentation series, which sold at Christie's Hong Kong for HKD 437,500 (about USD 56,195). That figure should be read as the highest confirmed sale identified in current research rather than a verified all-time auction record, since comprehensive Korean auction-house archives were not fully accessible. His primary market activity runs through galleries: Perrotin and Tang Contemporary Art are both named as current international representation, and Perrotin is presenting his 2026 career-spanning solo exhibition in Venice. He is also regularly exhibited by Korean galleries including Gana Art and Joongjung Gallery.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No published catalogue raisonne has been identified and no certificate-of-authenticity program is documented. The Shim Moon-Seup Art and Culture Foundation coordinates recent exhibitions and is the most likely point of contact for provenance questions, though its authentication role has not been confirmed in public sources.

Shim Moon Seup's institutional record, spanning Korean museum exhibitions and gallery representation with Perrotin and Tang Contemporary Art, is considerably stronger than his public auction record, which remains thin and difficult to fully verify from available sources. No catalogue raisonne has been identified, and no certificate-of-authenticity program is documented, so provenance and studio or foundation verification matter more than usual. Collectors should treat any single auction result for this artist with caution given the limited number of tracked sales, and should expect Korean-language auction sources to be more informative than international houses for a fuller price history.
