Shirley Jaffe

Shirley Jaffe was born Shirley Sternstein on October 2, 1923, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She studied at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, completing a certificate there in 1945, and afterward attended the Phillips Art School in Washington, D.C. In 1949 she moved to Paris, joining a wave of American expatriate artists in the postwar city, and she remained based in the Paris region for the rest of her life.

Her early paintings worked within the gestural, painterly vocabulary of abstract expressionism. A Ford Foundation grant took her to West Berlin for a year, from 1963 to 1964, a period she and later writers have linked to her subsequent break with gestural abstraction. In the mid 1960s she adopted a colorful, geometric style built from flat, interlocking planes and angular color shapes, a vocabulary she continued to develop across the following decades. She showed early in Paris with Galerie Jean Fournier before joining Galerie Nathalie Obadia, which has represented her since 1999, mounted solo exhibitions of her work in 2001, 2008, and 2013, and has represented her estate since her death in 2016.

Shirley Jaffe died on September 29, 2016, in Louveciennes, France, at the age of 92. In 2025 her descendants established the Shirley Jaffe Foundation, dedicated to the preservation, research, publication, and dissemination of her work, operating alongside Galerie Nathalie Obadia in stewarding the estate.

Critical attention to Jaffe's work has grown substantially since her death. Writers and curators consistently frame her career around a single pivotal shift: from a gestural, second generation abstract expressionist idiom to the colorful, geometric compositions she is now best known for, a change most institutions date to the early to mid 1960s. The 2022 Centre Pompidou retrospective, "Shirley Jaffe: An American Woman in Paris," followed by presentations at Kunstmuseum Basel and Musee Matisse in Nice, was widely treated in French and Swiss museum programming as a major reassessment of a painter who had been underrecognized relative to her male American and French contemporaries in Paris.

Jaffe's auction market has historically been thin, but it strengthened notably in 2024 and 2025. Her auction record is held by The Basilica (1994), which sold for EUR 328,000 (about USD 375,800) at Artcurial in Paris on June 5, 2025, a result reported at the time as a new world auction record for the artist. That sale surpassed a prior record set by The Golden Edge (1982), which sold for USD 126,400 at Christie's in Paris on September 24, 2024. The traveling retrospective that opened at the Centre Pompidou in 2022 and toured to Kunstmuseum Basel and Musee Matisse in Nice through 2023 to 2024 has coincided with this rise in auction activity and appears to be building sustained institutional and market demand for a painter who sold relatively rarely at auction during her lifetime.

No catalogue raisonne of Jaffe's work has been published. Authentication and provenance questions run through Galerie Nathalie Obadia, which has represented her estate since 2016, and through the Shirley Jaffe Foundation, established by her descendants in 2025 specifically to research and document her output. Her auction history remains small in absolute number of lots, so the 2025 record price for The Basilica should be read against a limited comparable set rather than as a smooth market trend. The 2022 to 2024 retrospective tour is the strongest available signal of long-term institutional durability for collectors weighing her market today.
