Shiy De-Jinn

Shiy De-Jinn was born in 1923 in Sichuan Province, China. He studied at Hangzhou National College of Art (also known as the National Hangzhou School of Art) under the painter Lin Fengmian, graduating in 1948. That same year he left mainland China for Taiwan, where he began teaching at provincial Chiayi High School, and later taught in the architecture department at Tamkang University and at National Taiwan Normal University.

He held his first solo exhibition in 1957. In 1962 the US Department of State invited him, together with the painter Liao Chi-chun, to visit the United States; he went on to hold a solo exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1963, before touring the United Kingdom and Italy. He also spent a period of about three years studying painting in Paris, though the exact years of that stay are not documented in available sources. In 1975 he received the Chungshan Literary Prize Award, one of Taiwan's significant cultural honors.
