Srihadi Soedarsono

Srihadi Soedarsono was born in Solo (Surakarta), Central Java, on 4 December 1931, though some sources give a different day within 1931 and the exact date is not settled beyond doubt. He studied art in Bandung from 1952 to 1959 under the Dutch-trained instructor Ries Mulder, part of the group of painters later known as the Bandung School for its emphasis on formal, academically grounded abstraction. He went on to earn a master's degree from Ohio State University in the United States in 1962, an education that shaped a practice moving between figuration and near-abstract, cosmic imagery.

Over more than five decades, Srihadi built a body of work that the critic Jean Couteau organized into two loose categories: cosmic paintings and figure paintings, both understood as part of a spiritual quest. Recurring subjects included the Borobudur temple, Balinese dancers, and meditative Javanese court imagery, alongside luminous, horizon-banded abstractions. He also worked for decades as an educator and designed the official symbol of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), where he taught. He died at his home in Bandung, West Java, on 26 February 2022, at the age of 90.

Srihadi is generally treated by Indonesian and regional critics as one of the last major links to the country's first generation of academically trained modernists. Sotheby's, in an obituary published at his death in 2022, described him as an epoch-defining modernist of Indonesian art and one of the last major figures associated with the Bandung School. Writing on his monograph Srihadi Soedarsono, The Path of the Soul, the critic Jean Couteau divided his output into cosmic works and figure paintings, both framed as part of a search for union with the divine, a reading that has become the standard critical lens for his later, more abstract canvases. Museum retrospectives, including 70 Years Journey of Roso (2016) and Man x Universe (2020), both at the National Gallery of Indonesia, reinforced his standing as a senior statesman of Indonesian painting in his final decade.

Sotheby's Hong Kong sold Srihadi's painting Dalam Meditasi Bedhoyo Ketawang (State of Meditation, Bedhoyo Ketawang) for HKD 3,500,000, about USD 447,000, in a Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian art sale in July 2020, the highest price found in the research for this profile; the exact day of that sale could not be confirmed from public sources.
