Stefan Krygier

Stefan Krygier was born on 23 August 1923 in Łódź, Poland. He studied fine arts at the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Sztuk Plastycznych in Łódź, now the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts, in the studio led by Władysław Strzemiński. Sources place these studies across roughly 1946 to 1951, with one memorial record giving 1950 as his graduation year. He later trained as an architect, studying at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology from 1959 to 1963 and receiving his architect's diploma in 1963.

Krygier taught for decades at his alma mater in Łódź and also lectured at the architecture institute of the Łódź University of Technology, reaching full professor rank in 1990. His practice moved from constructivist beginnings, through informel painting, into kinetic spatial compositions and late simultaneous paintings, organized around a personal concept he termed the Ośrodek Kondensacji Formy, or Form Condensation Center. He received Poland's Silver Cross of Merit in 1972 and the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art, 2nd Degree, in 1973.

He was married to the architect Krystyna Krygier, née Burzanka, and the couple had a daughter, Monika. Stefan Krygier died on 8 November 1997 in Łódź, and is buried at the Doły municipal cemetery there.

Krygier's standing rests primarily on institutional and academic recognition in Poland rather than on a developed body of published art criticism. His lineage under Strzemiński placed him within the core of Polish postwar constructivism, and his professorship at the Łódź academy shaped later generations of students. International attention followed a 2018 exhibition, The Pseudogroups of Stefan Krygier, at Green Point Projects in Brooklyn, New York, which received coverage in Hyperallergic, though no independently sourced review naming a specific critic could be located in current research. In 2023, the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź organized a large exhibition of his work, Form Condensation Center, presented in Venice alongside the Venice Architecture Biennale and framed as a reappraisal of his combined art and architecture practice.

No verified all-time auction record for Stefan Krygier could be confirmed in current research. Works attributed to him have appeared at Polish auction houses: a patinated bronze sculpture, Nofret (1965), was offered at a Polswiss Art art auction in Warsaw on 8 December 2020, and Ośrodek Kondensacji Formy II (1972) appeared in a Polswiss Art pre-auction exhibition in Warsaw in August and September 2025. Neither sale's hammer price could be confirmed in current sources. Desa Unicum, a major Polish auction house, maintains an artist page for Krygier but currently lists no available works. No gallery or estate is currently confirmed to represent him commercially; his visibility instead comes through museum exhibitions and occasional secondary-market appearances in Poland.
