Stevan Dohanos

Stevan Dohanos was born May 18, 1907, in Lorain, Ohio. He began his art training through correspondence courses with the International Correspondence School, then moved on to night classes at the Cleveland School of Art. No source consulted documents a formal degree.

Dohanos built his career chiefly through magazine illustration, producing cover paintings for The Saturday Evening Post from the 1940s into the early 1960s. Sources differ on the exact count, citing figures from roughly 100 to 125 covers, depicting small-town and everyday American subjects in a realist, socially observant style. Wikipedia and the Whitney Museum's biography both cite Grant Wood and Edward Hopper as formative influences on his painting. Dohanos also had a long relationship with the United States Postal Service, chairing the National Stamp Advisory Committee and contributing to the design of numerous commemorative stamps, including a 1959 issue marking the tenth anniversary of NATO. Published counts of the stamps he personally designed vary widely across sources, from roughly two dozen to several hundred, and cannot be resolved to a single figure here.

In Westport, Connecticut, Dohanos was a founding faculty member of the Famous Artists School, and he served as President of the Society of Illustrators from 1961 to 1963, later being elected to the Society's Hall of Fame in 1971.
