Sui Jianguo

Sui Jianguo was born in 1956 in Qingdao, Shandong province, China. He earned a BA from the Fine Arts Department of Shandong University of Arts (also referenced in some sources as Shandong Institute of Fine Arts) in 1984, then an MA from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing in 1989, where he later became a professor and, per multiple sources, either chaired or currently heads the Sculpture Department.

His work is closely associated with a small number of recurring motifs: empty Mao suits rendered in bronze and other materials, cast dinosaur figures used to comment on manufacturing and globalization in the Made in China series, and appropriated classical sculptural forms such as the Discus Thrower reworked into new contexts. He has exhibited internationally since the 1990s, including a solo presentation of Discus Thrower at the British Museum in London (2012) and a major retrospective, Dimensions Indefinitely Variable: Sui Jianguo 1974 to 2024, at TAG Art Museum in his native Qingdao (2024 to 2025).
