Sylvain Pinaud

Sylvain Pinaud was born in France in 1978. He trained at the watchmaking school at Lycee Edgar Faure in Morteau, completing a four year professional baccalaureate in horlogerie. Independent watch press converges on 1998 as his graduation year, while his own professional profile lists attendance from 1995 to 1999. After school he worked in the Swiss watch industry in Sainte Croix; when his employer relocated in 2016, he stayed on and eventually set up his own independent workshop there in 2018.

His first independent watch, a monopusher chronograph unveiled in 2018, drew attention for its black polished chronograph finishing and, per most accounts, earned him the Meilleur Ouvrier de France title in 2019, France's formal recognition of master craft (the AHCI's own profile dates the award to 2018, the same year the chronograph was presented). He introduced his Origine model, a time only three hand watch, at the AHCI's Grand Exhibition of Watch and Clockmakers during Watches and Wonders in 2022, and the watch went on to win the Horological Revelation prize at that year's Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve. A later collaboration with Massena LAB on a monopusher chronograph won the Chronograph Watch Prize at the 2024 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve, his second GPHG win. He became a member of the Academie Horlogere des Createurs Independants in 2024 and, as of 2026, works with a team of close to ten people in his Sainte Croix workshop.

Trade press has been consistent in treating Pinaud as a standout among the current generation of independent watchmakers. Phillips wrote in 2022 that he is "discreet yet highly talented" and "one of the most lauded contemporary and independent watchmakers to come on the market in recent years." Coverage from Monochrome Watches, Europa Star, and A Collected Man repeatedly returns to two points: the quality of his hand finishing, particularly the black polished chronograph work praised in his early pieces, and the speed with which formal recognition, culminating in two Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve wins, followed his move to full independence.

Pinaud's watches are sold directly through his own atelier and through specialist retailers such as Emeraude and The Hour Glass, and they have increasingly appeared at auction. The best documented public sale to date is an Origine (lot 138) that hammered at CHF 165,100, about USD 188,550, against a CHF 60,000 to 120,000 estimate at Phillips' Geneva Watch Auction: XX, held November 9 to 10, 2024. Production runs from a single small workshop, which keeps public auction activity thin.

Pinaud produces on a small scale from a single Swiss workshop, so any given watch is scarce by design. There is no catalogue raisonne or third party authentication board for his work; verification runs through his own atelier records, his AHCI membership, and the manufacturer certificate issued with each piece. Auction activity is still thin, with the roughly USD 188,550 (CHF 165,100) Phillips result the clearest public benchmark to date, so collectors should treat any single sale as an early data point rather than a settled market trend.
