Szabolcs Bozó

Szabolcs Bozó was born in 1992 in Pécs, Hungary. He describes himself as largely self-taught: in an interview, he said he was accepted into an art-focused secondary school after primary school, studied sculpture there for four years, and left before completing a fifth year. The school is not named in that interview or elsewhere, and no college or university art degree is documented for him in any source consulted.

Bozó moved to London after finishing secondary school and has lived there since, by his own account for well over a decade. He worked in hospitality in London before his paintings of jiggling, smiling, cartoon-like creatures, shared on Instagram, drew gallery attention. His first significant gallery exhibitions followed in 2019 and 2020, including a two-person show with Richard Woods at L21 Gallery in Palma de Mallorca and "Big Bang" at Semiose in Paris, his first exhibition in France. Representation from Carl Kostyál in London followed in 2021, and exhibitions with Almine Rech across Brussels, Venice, and New York expanded his profile through 2022 to 2024. In 2025 he had his first solo exhibition in Hungary, "Lelki Társ / Soulmate," at NEO Contemporary Art Space in Budapest. He continues to live and work in London.

Bozó's critical reception so far runs mostly through gallery and museum framing rather than sustained independent art criticism. Budapest's NEO Contemporary Art Space, hosting his 2025 Hungarian debut, described him as one of the most sought-after young Hungarian painters and stated that he was the country's highest-selling living visual artist at auction in 2023; that description comes from a single exhibiting gallery and has not been independently corroborated, so it should be read as a promotional characterization rather than a verified ranking. Broader press coverage, including a 2022 Artnet market report, has focused on the speed of his rise from Instagram-shared paintings to strong secondary-market results rather than on sustained critical analysis of his work.

Bozó's auction record is "Untitled" (2020), which sold for HKD 1,386,000 (about USD 176,572) at Christie's Hong Kong on 27 May 2022, as part of the house's 21st Century Art Day Sale. His second-highest recorded auction price is for "Piros Flamingó" (Red Flamingo), sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong on 8 July 2022 for HKD 1,008,000; secondary sources give differing USD conversions for that price, from about USD 128,000 to about USD 162,000, so no single USD figure is stated here with confidence. Reporting on his 2022 auction activity noted 34 appearances at auction that year, with combined sales of about USD 1.5 million and an average sale price of about USD 50,156, indicating a market with broad but comparatively low-value participation beneath the top results.

Bozó's market is young: his gallery relationships with Semiose and Carl Kostyál, and prior exhibitions with Almine Rech, place his work firmly within primary-market channels, and there is no catalogue raisonne or formal authentication program to consult.
