Tal R

Tal R was born Tal Rosenzweig in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1967, and has lived and worked in Copenhagen since completing his studies there. He trained first at Billedskolen, an art school in Copenhagen, from 1986 to 1988, and then at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1994 to 2000, graduating that year. He has exhibited under the name Tal R since early in his career, while galleries and reference sources continue to record his birth name, Tal Rosenzweig, alongside it.

Following his academy training, Tal R became a professor at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf, a position he held from 2005 to 2014. His practice has consistently drawn on found and remembered imagery, from domestic interiors to folkloric and pop-cultural references, rendered in a distinctive, saturated palette. He continues to live and work in Copenhagen.

Institutional writing on Tal R has emphasized his rapid rise from a student generation at the Royal Danish Academy to a fixture of major European painting surveys. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art's 2017 exhibition text for Academy of Tal R described him as one of the striking artists of his generation with a growing international reputation, a framing echoed in later institutional shows at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, MOCAD Detroit, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Ordrupgaard, and Palazzo Experimental in Venice. Across this run of exhibitions, curators have consistently returned to his handling of color and his reworking of folk, domestic, and popular imagery as the defining feature of the work, more than to any single stylistic label.

Tal R's secondary market is comparatively thin and not consistently documented across public sources. One frequently cited figure puts his auction high at USD 276,000 for the work Wave Lamp, reported sold at Sotheby's New York in 2007, though the exact sale date is not published and this figure has not been independently corroborated by a second primary auction record; it should be treated as provisional. Phillips' own artist page separately lists two other six-figure results, Adieu Interessant (orange) at GBP 203,200 and Last drawing before mars at GBP 137,500, though Phillips does not publish exact sale dates for either lot, so it cannot be confirmed whether these exceed the Wave Lamp figure once converted to dollars. Other recorded results sit further below that level, including a Lempertz sale of Electric Light Orchestra for EUR 48,800 including premium and a Heritage Auctions result of USD 4,000 on 23 May 2019. The spread between these figures, rather than a single confirmed benchmark price, is the clearest picture the public record currently supports.
