Tawee Nandakwang

Tawee Nandakwang was born in 1925 in Lamphun Province, in northern Thailand. He studied painting at Silpakorn University in Bangkok, the country's leading fine arts institution, though available sources do not confirm an exact degree title or graduation year. In the early 1950s he won a string of top prizes at the National Exhibition of Art in Bangkok, including gold medals at the 3rd and 4th National Exhibitions (exact years not confirmed in available sources) and, according to Christie's, three consecutive First Prize gold medal awards in 1952, 1953, and 1954. A portrait of his first wife was separately named best portrait of the year at the 9th National Exhibition.

He went on to study in Europe, completing a diploma in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1961. His work moved between Impressionist and Cubist influenced abstraction and more traditional Thai subject matter: portraits, landscapes and waterscapes, still lifes, and later floral compositions such as his 1985 painting Lotus.
