Thawan Duchanee

Thawan Duchanee was born on 27 September 1939 in Chiang Rai, Thailand. A scholarship from the Thai Ministry of Education took him, while still in his early teens, to Poh Chang Arts and Crafts College in Bangkok. He went on to Silpakorn University's Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, entering in 1958 and studying under Silpa Bhirasri (Corrado Feroci), the Italian sculptor regarded as the father of Thai modern art. Some secondary sources describe a subsequent postgraduate fellowship, funded by the Dutch government, for study at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam, though this detail is inconsistently reported and the exact institutional titles and years are not documented in public records.
