Theaster Gates

Theaster Gates was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1973, a birth year consistently given by his own studio, Wikipedia, Richard Gray Gallery, White Cube, and Artprice. He grew up on Chicago's South Side and attended Lane Technical High School before earning a B.S. in urban planning from Iowa State University in 1996. He went on to earn an M.A. in fine arts and religious studies from the University of Cape Town in 1998, and later returned to Iowa State for an M.S. in urban planning, ceramics, and religious studies, completed in 2005 or 2006 depending on the source.

That combination of urban planning, ceramics, and theology became the foundation of his practice. Gates is best known for treating the rehabilitation of vacant buildings as sculpture: the Dorchester Projects and the Stony Island Arts Bank on Chicago's South Side, developed through his nonprofit Rebuild Foundation, converted abandoned structures into archives, libraries, and gathering spaces. He is a professor at the University of Chicago, appointed jointly in the Department of Visual Arts and the Harris School of Public Policy.

His exhibition history accelerated after his inclusion in dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel in 2012 and a solo show at Whitechapel Gallery, London, in 2013. He went on to mount exhibitions at institutions including Fondazione Prada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and the Sprengel Museum in Hannover.
