Theodore Ralli

Theodore Ralli was born on 16 February 1852 in Constantinople, into a prominent Greek merchant family with roots on the island of Chios. He attended the Commercial School of Chalki near Constantinople, then went to England to work for the family trading firm Rallis and Mavroyiannis, studying at a college in Manchester. He resigned from the firm and moved to Paris in 1869, and from 1873 to 1880 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome and Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouy. He first exhibited publicly at the Salon des Refuses in Paris in 1873, and from 1875 he became a near-constant presence at the official Paris Salon, a run of participation that continued to the end of his life. From 1879 he also exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London.

Ralli divided his working life between France, Greece, and Egypt. From the late 1880s until 1904 he kept a studio in Cairo, where he spent winters and organized his own annual exhibitions. His honors accumulated steadily: an honourable mention at the 1885 Paris Salon; a distinction at the Olympia Exhibition in Athens in 1888; a silver medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889; membership on the competition jury at the 1900 Exposition Universelle; and a distinction at the Athens International Exhibition of 1903. Around 1900 to 1901 he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in France. He also exhibited at the Salon de Rouen in 1897, 1903, 1906, and 1909, and showed work in Athens during the 1896 Olympic Games.

Ralli died on 2 October 1909 in Lausanne, Switzerland, and was buried at the First Cemetery of Athens. In 1910 the National Gallery of Greece received a bequest from his estate; a year later, in 1911, the Theodoros Rallis Prize was awarded for the first time in Paris, and in 1912 the Rallis Competition was first held in Greece.
