Thomas Prichard Rossiter

Rossiter was born in 1818 in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended Hopkins School in New Haven and began his artistic training around 1835 with an apprenticeship, first studying painting with John Boyd and then, from about 1835 to 1836, with Nathaniel Jocelyn, the leading portrait painter in New Haven at the time.

Rossiter spent extended periods in Europe during the 1840s and 1850s. He later maintained a studio in Paris from 1853 to 1856 and won a gold medal at the 1855 Exposition Universelle for his painting Venice in the Fifteenth Century.
