Thomas Struth

Thomas Struth was born in 1954 in Geldern, Germany. He studied at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf from 1973 to 1980, beginning in painting under Gerhard Richter before joining, in 1976, the first class of the new photography program founded there by Bernd and Hilla Becher. That grounding in the Becher's typological, documentary approach shaped his own practice, which moved between deadpan urban streetscapes, family portraits, and, from the late 1980s, the Museum Photographs series depicting visitors looking at art inside institutions such as the Louvre and the Prado.

He represented Germany at the 44th Venice Biennale in 1990 and was included in Documenta IX in 1992. A major retrospective organized by Museu Serralves in Porto traveled from 2010 to 2012 to the K20 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Dusseldorf, the Whitechapel Gallery in London, and Kunsthaus Zurich. His Nature and Politics series, focused on laboratories, industrial facilities, and other sites of advanced technology, toured from 2016 to 2019 to venues including Museum Folkwang in Essen, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, while Figure Ground traveled to Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao from 2017 to 2019. He remains active, with new work presented as recently as 2026, and currently lives and works in Berlin.

His Museum Photographs are read as a meta-commentary on the act of looking at art, turning the gallery visitor into the subject of the picture, while his later Nature and Politics series extended that documentary rigor to sites of scientific and industrial power.
