Tilo Baumgärtel

Tilo Baumgärtel was born in 1972; institutional and gallery biographies in German most consistently place his birth in Leipzig, though English-language Wikipedia states Dresden, a discrepancy that has not been resolved in the public record. Before turning to art, he trained as a tool-making machinist; exact dates for this period are not documented in the sources consulted.

He studied painting at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB Leipzig) from 1991 to 1998 under Professor Arno Rink, then continued as Rink's Meisterschüler from 1998 to 2000. During and after his studies he received a series of German grants and residencies, including a Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes stipend in 1997, a residency at the German Study Centre in Venice in 2001, and, in 2002, the Kunstpreis der Sachsen LB along with grants from the State of Hesse and the Sparkassen Cultural Foundation Hessen-Thüringen.

Baumgärtel has held teaching roles at both academies central to his own training: an acting professorship for painting at HGB Leipzig around 2015 to 2016, an acting professorship at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle from 2018, and, from the summer semester of 2020, a full professorship for painting there.
