Why Ting Yin Yung matters
Ting Yin Yung, also romanized Ding Yanyong or T'ing Yin-Yung, was one of the first generation of Chinese painters to carry Western modernism, absorbed as a student in Japan, directly into the language of Chinese ink painting. He is a central figure in the history of Guangdong modern art and in the founding of art education in postwar Hong Kong, and museum interest in his work, most visibly a 2022 retrospective at the University of Hong Kong, has been rising even as his auction market remains comparatively thin and unevenly documented. For a collector, he is a case study in an artist whose institutional standing is well established while his price history still needs careful, source-by-source verification.

Biography
Ting Yin Yung was born on 15 April 1902 in Maopo Village, Xieji Town, Maoming County, Guangdong Province, China. He was educated first at home and at a primary school founded by his father, then completed a four-year program at Maoming County Middle School from 1916 to 1920. In the autumn of 1920 he traveled to Japan, studying Japanese and enrolling at the Kawabata Painting School before entering the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School in September 1921 as one of six foreign students. He graduated on 24 March 1925.
Back in China, Ting taught at art schools and universities including Zhonghua (Shanghai) University of Fine Arts and the Guangzhou Municipal Art School through the 1930s and 1940s, and he took part in the preparatory work that led to the founding of what is now the Guangzhou Museum. In 1949 he emigrated to Hong Kong, where he continued to teach and paint. In 1957 he co-founded the Fine Arts Specialized Training Program at New Asia College, which later became the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Trained first in oil painting and Western modernist idioms such as Fauvism, Expressionism, and elements of Cubism, Ting turned increasingly to traditional Chinese ink and brush from the 1950s onward, fusing that Western training with ink painting and calligraphic line. He continued teaching and painting in Hong Kong until his death on 23 December 1978 at St. Teresa's Hospital in Hong Kong.
Critical reception
Institutional recognition of Ting Yin Yung has centered on his role as a bridge figure between Western modernism and Chinese ink tradition. The University Museum and Art Gallery at the University of Hong Kong organized the 2022 retrospective Enduring Strength and Passion: The Chinese and Western Art of Ting Yin Yung, and the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong has published a dedicated monograph on his calligraphy, describing it as addressing a research gap in scholarship on the artist. His work has also been the subject of a retrospective, Dashing Hues, at the Asia University Museum of Modern Art in Taiwan, and has been shown internationally, including in Japan, France, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the United States, Italy, Australia, and Canada, according to his own biographical materials. The recurring critical theme is his synthesis: a painter formally trained in Western oil technique who spent the second half of his career translating that vocabulary into ink, brush, and seal-inspired line.
Market
Public auction data for Ting Yin Yung is thin and inconsistently documented across sources, and no single, independently verified all-time auction record, with a specific work, price, house, and exact sale date, could be confirmed for this profile. Aggregator data from MutualArt lists 19 of his works at auction, with realized prices reaching roughly USD 400,913 for paintings and USD 15,323 for works on paper. Artprice records nearly 3,975 auction appearances under the pinyin form of his name, Ding Yanyong, indicating an active but modestly documented secondary market. Christie's has included at least one of his works, a 1970 painting titled Nude, in a 20th/21st Century Evening Sale lot listing, attributed jointly as "Ting Yin Yung (Ding Yanyong)." His name appears across market databases under several romanizations, including Ting Yin Yung, Ding Yanyong, and T'ing Yin-Yung, which should all be treated as the same artist when researching price history.

Authentication and provenance
No catalogue raisonne.
A dedicated catalogue raisonne project (catalogueraisonne.org) documents 301 oil paintings dated 1925 to 1978, but this appears to cover oils only, and no comprehensive published catalogue raisonne spanning his ink paintings and calligraphy is confirmed. No certificate-of-authenticity program is documented. Works are typically verified through auction house specialists and the institutions that hold his archive.

What collectors should know
The catalogue raisonne project associated with Ting Yin Yung currently documents 301 oil paintings dated 1925 to 1978, but it appears to focus on oils and should not be assumed to cover his ink paintings or calligraphy, so provenance research benefits from checking academic and auction-house sources alongside it. No single, fully verified all-time auction record could be confirmed for this profile; the best documented public figures, from aggregator data, put realized prices for paintings at roughly USD 400,000, and collectors should verify any specific high price directly with the auction house before relying on it. There is no confirmed current gallery representation for the artist's estate; his work circulates through museums, the Li Ching Cultural & Educational Foundation, and the secondary market, including dealers such as Alisan Fine Arts. Because his name is transliterated multiple ways, Ting Yin Yung, Ding Yanyong, and T'ing Yin-Yung, a thorough search of any database should use all three forms to avoid missing sale history.
