Ton That Dao

Ton That Dao (Vietnamese: Ton That Dao) was born on 15 October 1910 in Phu Cat village, Hue, into the Ton That branch of the Nguyen royal family. After finishing secondary school in Hue, he sat the entrance exam for the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi and studied in the painting, sculpture, and decoration section, Class 8, from 1932 to 1937, graduating that year alongside classmates including Luong Xuan Nhi and Nguyen Van Khanh.

He returned to Hue to teach drawing at several of the city's schools, including Khai Dinh High School, Dong Khanh High School, Quoc Hoc, the Technical High School, Tin Duc High School, and the Hue Model High School. Under Emperor Bao Dai, the royal court invited him into the Hue Imperial City to teach painting to Crown Prince Bao Long, an appointment Vietnamese biographical sources treat as one of the high points of his career. He went on to become the first director of the Truong Quoc gia Cao dang My thuat Hue (National College of Fine Arts, Hue), now Hue University of Arts, a role Vietnamese sources place in 1957.

Ton That Dao died in Hue on 2 September 1979, at the family home at 53 Mac Dinh Chi in the city's Gia Hoi ward. Vietnamese press has since reported that paintings remaining in family hands have suffered from deterioration, and separately reported the theft of a lacquer painting of Thien Mu Pagoda from the same family address.

Ton That Dao's standing rests mainly on institutional and court recognition rather than international art criticism. He won a first prize for decorative design in Hue as early as 1920, a gold medal at the 1938 Hue Cosmetics Fair Exposition, and diplomas from fine-arts expositions in Hanoi, Cambodia, Japan, Saigon, and, in 1950 and 1952, the Vatican. In 1942 Emperor Bao Dai awarded him the Long Boi Tinh medal, and in 1944 he received a prize from the colonial Governor-General at that year's Salon. Vietnamese art-historical writing consistently frames him as one of Hue's foundational teaching painters, credited with building the city's fine-arts training pipeline and shaping a generation of students. No verifiable verbatim quotation from a named critic in a major international outlet could be confirmed in the available research, so none is reproduced here.

The best-documented auction result for Ton That Dao is Nhung nhac cong (The Musicians), a silk painting from 1936. MutualArt lists it as the artist's auction record at USD 227,138, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong in 2021, while Viet Art View cites a slightly different figure of USD 227,188 for the same painting; neither source gives an exact calendar date. A second silk work from the same year, an untitled painting of two girls, sold for USD 209,983 in April 2026, below the 2021 result. No gallery or estate is currently documented as representing him; his paintings continue to surface primarily through auction houses and private, largely Vietnamese, family collections.

Ton That Dao has no catalogue raisonne, no confirmed gallery or estate representation, and a very thin public auction record, currently just two individually documented headline sales. The exact sale date behind his auction-record painting, Nhung nhac cong, has not been independently confirmed, and two sources give slightly different prices for it (USD 227,138 versus USD 227,188), so provenance and sale documentation should be requested directly from any seller. Vietnamese press has also reported that family-held works have suffered condition problems and, in at least one case, theft, which makes chain-of-custody documentation especially important when evaluating any painting offered as his.
