Why Tunga matters
Tunga was one of the leading Brazilian artists of his generation, working across sculpture, installation, drawing, and performance to build a body of work built on alchemy, the body, and transformation of ordinary and unconventional materials, from magnets and iron filings to hair and resin. He is widely cited as the first contemporary artist to install a work at the Musee du Louvre in Paris, in 2005, and his work anchors two dedicated pavilions at Inhotim, one of Latin America's most significant contemporary art collections. Since his death in 2016, his estate's gallery representation has continued to expand across multiple regions, pointing to a market still being actively built around an artist whose institutional standing is already secure.

Biography
Tunga, born Antonio Jose de Barros Carvalho e Mello Mourao on 8 February 1952 in Palmares, Pernambuco, Brazil, was the son of the poet and writer Gerardo Melo Mourao and the social activist Lea Barros. He trained not as an artist but as an architect, completing a degree in architecture and urbanism at Universidade Santa Ursula in Rio de Janeiro in 1974. That architectural training informed a practice that treated space, the body, and materials as interdependent, and he developed a signature vocabulary of braids and hair, magnets, iron filings, and cast metal, often staged through performance works such as Xifopagas Capilares entre Nos, in which performers were joined by long braids of hair.
His exhibition record grew steadily through the 1980s and 1990s, including repeated appearances at the Sao Paulo Biennial beginning in 1981 and at the Venice Biennale in 1982, 1995, and 2001. He was included in documenta X in Kassel in 1997 and had a solo presentation at MoMA PS1 in New York in 2007. In 2005 he installed A la lumiere des deux mondes: une installation sous la pyramide beneath the pyramid at the Musee du Louvre, an occasion widely described in the Brazilian and international press as the first time a contemporary artist had a work exhibited there.
Tunga died on 6 June 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, at age 64, of cancer reported by multiple sources as throat or laryngeal cancer. His posthumous institutional profile has continued to grow, including a 2018 exhibition, Capillary Twins, at Tate Modern in London. His estate's gallery representation is reported across several regional partners, including Lisson Gallery in London, which took on the estate in partnership with Instituto Tunga, alongside Luhring Augustine in New York and Galeria Millan in Sao Paulo; sources do not agree on a single exact date for the current arrangement.
Critical reception
Institutional and market sources consistently place Tunga among the most significant Brazilian artists of his generation, citing his sustained presence at the Sao Paulo Biennial and Venice Biennale, his inclusion in documenta X, and the historic 2005 Louvre installation as evidence of a career that moved fluidly between Brazilian and international contexts. Museums and galleries alike frame his work around the transformation of unlikely materials, magnets, hair, resin, and metal, into meditations on the body and on alchemical change, and Inhotim's decision to devote two permanent pavilions to his work is regularly cited as a marker of his standing within Brazilian contemporary art. Coverage of his 2016 death, in outlets including Frieze, Artnet News, The Art Newspaper, and Hyperallergic, uniformly treated him as a major loss to Brazilian and international contemporary art.
Market
Tunga's documented auction high is Pente (1994), which sold for USD 254,000 at Sotheby's New York on 14 May 2024, a result that market analysts at HENI described as a roughly 70 percent increase over his prior record. That earlier record was Palindromo Incesto (1992), which sold for USD 149,000 at Christie's New York on 28 May 2014. As with many artists whose primary output is large-scale sculpture and installation rather than a steady stream of smaller saleable works, his auction market is thin relative to his institutional footprint, and public sale results remain limited in number. The estate's spread across multiple regional galleries, including Lisson Gallery, Luhring Augustine, and Galeria Millan, is the clearest recent signal of active market building around the estate.

What collectors should know
There is no published catalogue raisonne for Tunga, and no certificate-of-authenticity program has been documented; verification runs through the artist's estate and its current gallery representatives. Because his practice centered on large installations and performance rather than a high volume of discrete saleable objects, auction supply is limited and individual results can vary widely depending on the work's scale, materials, and exhibition history. Given his use of unconventional materials such as magnets, hair, and cast metal, provenance and conservation records deserve particular attention. The estate's representation across multiple regional galleries, including Lisson Gallery, Luhring Augustine, and Galeria Millan, is a recent development collectors should watch as a driver of future market activity.
