Turi Simeti

Turi Simeti was born on 5 August 1929 in Alcamo, Sicily. He had no documented formal art school training; multiple gallery sources describe him as self-taught. In 1958 he moved to Rome, where he began painting in earnest and became a regular presence at Alberto Burri's studio, an association several galleries cite as his central early influence and mentorship.

His decisive public moment came in 1965, when he was included in ZERO Avantgarde, an exhibition staged at Lucio Fontana's studio in Milan that gathered Italian artists working in the orbit of the international Zero movement. From that point, Simeti concentrated on his signature device, stretching canvas over wooden ovoid forms fixed to the stretcher bars so that one or more raised ovals emerge from an otherwise flat, monochrome surface. He lived and worked in Milan for decades.

Simeti died in Milan on 16 March 2021, at the age of 91, according to the artist's official archive; some secondary press notices instead date his death to 17 March 2021, a discrepancy that has not been resolved in public sources.
