Uroš Predić

Uros Predic was born on 7 December 1857 in the village of Orlovat, then part of the Austrian Empire and now in Serbia. He attended primary school in Orlovat, a German-language school in Crepaja, and then the seven-grade Realschule in Pancevo from 1869 to 1876, an institution later renamed in his honor. In 1876 he went to Vienna, where he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in the class of Christian Griepenkerl, winning the Gundel Prize for oil painting in 1879 and graduating in 1880. In 1882 he worked in Griepenkerl's private atelier and served as an assistant at the Academy, before returning to Serbia.

Predic became one of the most prolific portraitists of his generation, reportedly painting more than a thousand portraits over his career, alongside genre scenes and religious commissions for Orthodox churches. His best-known work, Kosovo Maiden, became one of the touchstone images of Serbian national painting. He was elected a member of the Serbian Royal Academy, now the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, becoming a full member in 1910.

He continued painting into old age, exhibiting jointly with Paja Jovanovic in Belgrade and Novi Sad in 1949. Uros Predic died on 11 February 1953 in Belgrade, at age 95, though a minority of reference sources give the date as 12 February. In 1954, his studio and remaining works passed to what is now the National Museum in Zrenjanin, which still holds the largest single body of his material as the Uros Predic Legacy.

Predic is treated in Serbian scholarship and museum programming as a foundational figure, valued for combining rigorous academic training with an accessible, humane genre and portrait realism. The National Museum in Belgrade's 2022 to 2023 retrospective, Uros Predic. Life Dedicated to Beauty and Art, drew more than 97,000 visitors over 76 days, among the best-attended exhibitions in Serbia in recent decades, and brought together more than a hundred paintings alongside archival material from his studio. The recurring critical theme in Serbian scholarship is his role as a bridge figure: trained in the conservative Vienna Academy system yet devoted to depicting ordinary Serbian and Vojvodina life, church subjects, and pivotal national historical themes.

Predic's market runs almost entirely through European auction houses rather than galleries, and public sales are infrequent. His all-time auction record was set on 28 April 2025 at Dorotheum in Vienna, where A Girl (Angelina, the Artist's Niece at the Age of 7) with a Book in a Red Armchair, a work from 1884, sold for EUR 169,500 (about USD 192,100) against an estimate of EUR 15,000 to 20,000, an increase of about 300 percent over his previous record. That prior record, Queen Natalia Obrenovic in Paris (1890), had sold for USD 47,700 at Bonhams in London on 13 November 2007. The 2025 buyer was Serbia's Ministry of Culture, acquiring the painting on behalf of the National Museum of Serbia, underscoring that active demand for his best works now comes substantially from state institutions repatriating pieces to Serbian public collections rather than from private collectors.

Predic has no catalogue raisonne, and there is no commercial gallery or estate representing his work; the bulk of his significant paintings sit in Serbian and regional museum collections, led by the National Museum in Zrenjanin's Uros Predic Legacy. Public auction supply is thin and concentrated at a handful of European houses, chiefly Dorotheum in Vienna, so any single result should be read against a small sample rather than a deep price history. Because Serbian state institutions have shown they will actively bid to repatriate major works, as with the 2025 Dorotheum sale, provenance, subject matter, and the painting's prior exhibition or museum history matter more to eventual value than they would for an artist with a conventional gallery-driven market.
