Vasili Dimitrievich Polenov

Vasili Dimitrievich Polenov was born on 20 May 1844 by the Julian calendar in use in Russia at the time (1 June 1844, Gregorian) in Saint Petersburg. He completed his secondary schooling at the gymnasium in Petrozavodsk, then in 1863 enrolled simultaneously in the Law Faculty of Saint Petersburg University and the historical painting program at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He also studied privately with the landscape painter Pavel Cherkasov and, in several periods, with Pavel Chistyakov. In 1871 he completed both courses of study, earning a law degree from the university and completing the Academy program with the Large Gold Medal for The Raising of Jairus's Daughter, which carried a pensioner's right to study abroad.

Polenov became closely associated with the Peredvizhniki, the Society of Traveling Art Exhibitions, and from 1879 took part annually in its touring shows across Russian cities through 1923. His 1878 painting Moscow Courtyard, first shown at a Wanderers exhibition, became his most widely recognized work, and he went on to paint major biblical narrative canvases, including the large Life of Christ cycle that occupied him across several decades. He taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and was elected Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1876, Professor in 1892, and a full member of the Academy in 1893. He established a country estate at Borok, on the Oka River in the Tula region, which he developed as a working studio and, later in life, opened as a museum for the public; in 1926 the Soviet state named him a People's Artist of the RSFSR. He died on 18 July 1927 at his estate at Borok, since renamed Polenovo, and was buried at the rural cemetery in the nearby village of Bekhovo.

Polenov is credited by Russian art history as a founder of the school of realistic landscape painting that shaped the Peredvizhniki generation, and Moscow Courtyard is generally treated as the high point of that achievement, fusing landscape and genre subject matter with an unusually direct, light-filled realism. His large-scale biblical narrative paintings, by contrast, drew on his travels in the Middle East and were read by contemporaries as an ambitious attempt to bring historical and religious subject matter into a realist idiom. In 1926 the Soviet government recognized his career with the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR.

Polenov's market is thin, concentrated in Russian-art specialist sales, and dominated by his large biblical narrative canvases. His auction high is Who is without sin among you? (also rendered as He that is without Sin), which sold for GBP 4,070,000 at Bonhams London on 30 November 2011, then a record for the artist. A related canvas from the same Life of Christ cycle, And she went and told them that she had been with Him as they mourned and wept, sold at Bonhams London in March 2024 for GBP 1,379,000; some press coverage described this as a "world record," but it did not surpass the 2011 Bonhams result. A separate work, Egyptian Girl (1876), appeared at Sotheby's London's Russian Art Evening Sale in 2008, though a confirmed sale price could not be verified in current sources. Because sales are infrequent, individual results depend heavily on the specific work and its place within his oeuvre rather than tracing a smooth price trend.

Polenov has no published catalogue raisonne; verification of works rests on provenance and on the archival holdings of the Polenov estate museum at Polenovo and the major Russian state museums that hold his core paintings. His auction market is small and irregular, concentrated in Russian-art specialist sales in London, so any single result, including his 2011 auction high, should be read against the specific work's place in his oeuvre rather than as evidence of a broad market trend. The estate at Polenovo, still directed by his descendants, functions as the closest thing to an ongoing steward of his legacy, since no commercial gallery currently represents the artist or the estate.
