Vasily Polenov

Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov was born on 1 June 1844 (20 May, Old Style) in St. Petersburg into an educated family that emphasized science, history, and the arts in his home schooling. He received early drawing instruction as a child and studied privately with the painter Pavel Chistyakov, who also gave him informal training alongside his formal Academy studies.

From 1863 to 1871 he pursued two courses of study at once: the law faculty of St. Petersburg University, where he is documented as completing a law degree in 1871, and the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he trained as a painter.
