Victor Man

Victor Man was born in 1974 in Cluj, Romania. He enrolled at the Academia de Arte Plastice Ioan Andreescu in Cluj in the late 1990s but left after about two years to continue his training abroad. From 2000 to 2004 he studied painting at the Jerusalem Studio School under the figurative painter Israel Hershberg, a period during which he lived at the Poor Clares' Convent in Jerusalem and painted from nature in its garden. He returned to Cluj in 2004 and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts there.

Man represented Romania in the Romanian Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, an early marker of his rise alongside the broader Cluj school of painters. In 2014 he was named Deutsche Bank's Artist of the Year, with an accompanying exhibition, Zephir, at the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin that traveled to Haus der Kunst, Munich, and Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw. In 2015 his work appeared in the Venice Biennale's central exhibition, All the World's Futures, curated by Okwui Enwezor. His institutional exhibition history also includes Flowering Ego at Gladstone Gallery, New York, in 2018, Eyelids, Towards Evening at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, in 2022, and The Lines of Life at the Stadel Museum, Frankfurt, in 2023 to 2024.

Man is represented internationally by David Zwirner, which announced the relationship in October 2024, alongside long-standing ties to Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin and Paris and to Gladstone Gallery in New York and Brussels. Current bios describe him as living and working in Europe. His work is included in Clair-obscur at the Bourse de Commerce, Pinault Collection, Paris, on view through August 2026.
