Vladimir Georgievich Bekhteev

Vladimir Georgievich Bekhteev was born on 15 April 1878 in Moscow into a noble family. He was educated at the Moscow Real School from 1888 to 1894, then at the Nikolaev Cavalry School in St. Petersburg from 1894 to 1896, a military education that preceded his turn to art. He studied privately in the studio of Y. F. Cionglinsky in 1901, then traveled abroad in 1902 to study with Heinrich Knirr in Munich and at Fernand Cormon's atelier in Paris. No formal fine-arts degree is documented for him.

In Munich he became associated with the city's avant-garde scene and exhibited with the Neue Kunstlervereinigung Munchen (N.K.V.M.) in its first exhibition of 1909 to 1910 and its second exhibition of 1910 to 1911, appearing alongside founding members Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, and Franz Marc. He was also connected to the Jack of Diamonds (Bubnovy Valet) group active in Moscow in the same years. He worked across easel painting, watercolor and drawing, book illustration, and stage design, producing mythological and circus scenes and illustrations to works of Russian literature.

Bekhteev remained in the Soviet Union and continued to work through the mid-twentieth century. In the late 1960s, generally cited as 1968, he received the title Honored Worker of the Arts of the RSFSR, though one source dates the honor to 1969. He died on 21 June 1971 in Moscow and is buried in the necropolis of the Donskoy Monastery.
