Wang Keping

Wang Keping was born in 1949 near Beijing. He was still in secondary school when the Cultural Revolution began in 1966; like many of his generation, he was enrolled as a Red Guard and later sent to the countryside for agricultural labor and political "re-education," an interruption that ended his formal schooling. He has said plainly that he never had the chance to attend college. Through the 1970s he held a series of jobs, including work in an army theater troupe and in the drama department of China Central Television, none of which involved art training. He is self-taught as a sculptor, starting to carve wood in 1978 at the age of twenty-nine.

In September 1979, Wang Keping and roughly twenty other young artists hung an unauthorized exhibition on the fence outside the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. Police closed it within days, but the group, later known as the Stars (Xingxing), staged authorized shows at the same museum later that year and in 1980. Wang's carved wood sculptures from this period, including works titled Idol and Silence, are read as pointed commentary on censorship and restricted expression under the Communist Party, and remain central to his historical reputation. He moved to Paris in 1984 and has lived and worked there since, continuing to carve in wood and cast in bronze. He is currently represented by Galerie Nathalie Obadia in Paris and Brussels, his gallery since 2017, and by 10 Chancery Lane Gallery in Hong Kong.

Wang Keping's standing rests first on history: as a co-founder of the Stars Group, he is credited with helping open the door to independent, non-state-sanctioned art in China at the end of the Mao era, and his early wood carvings are consistently discussed as acts of political as much as aesthetic significance. That standing has been reinforced by sustained institutional attention, including his first monographic museum show at the Asia University Museum of Modern Art in Taichung in 1989, a 2007 Stars Group retrospective at the Today Art Museum in Beijing, a solo exhibition at the Musee Zadkine in Paris in 2010, and a dedicated presentation at the Musee Rodin in Paris in 2022. France recognized him as a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2015. An earlier work, Idol, a bronze sculpture, sold for HKD 920,000, about USD 118,000, at Christie's Hong Kong in a day sale of Asian contemporary art in May 2011, and was described at the time as an artist record; that figure has since been surpassed by the 2022 result above. A market report circulated by the artist's own studio has suggested that his strongest prices, in the range of roughly USD 25,000 to 400,000, tend to be achieved through private gallery sales rather than at auction, though this range should be treated as indicative rather than confirmed by transaction-level data.

Wang Keping's market is defined by scarcity rather than volume. Public auction results are few and dated, so any single sale, including the 2022 Artcurial result for Couple and the earlier 2011 Christie's Hong Kong sale of Idol, should be read as a data point rather than a trend line.
