Wang Yan Cheng

Wang Yan Cheng was born on January 9, 1960, in Guangdong province, in southern China. He trained first at the Shandong Institute of Fine Arts in Yantai, receiving his diploma around 1985, and went on to study at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in the mid to late 1980s. He moved to France in 1989 and continued his education in plastic arts at Jean Monnet University in Saint-Etienne, with sources placing the span of that study between roughly 1990 and 1993.

His work is generally described as lyrical abstraction: large, layered color fields built up in gestural passages that critics and gallery texts connect to Chinese landscape painting and Taoist cosmology. The 2025 Florence exhibition, "Light, Energy, Infinity" at the Galerie de l'Academie, continued the pattern of institutional recognition that has defined his career since his 2000 solo museum debut in Guangzhou.

The best-documented auction result identified for Wang Yan Cheng is Un Seul Visage, which sold for HKD 2,355,000 including premium (HKD 1,875,000 hammer) at Christie's Hong Kong on November 27, 2006, per Artprice.
