Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu was born on June 22, 1972, in Nairobi, Kenya, and attended nursery, primary, and secondary school at Loreto Convent Msongari in Nairobi before leaving Kenya at seventeen for the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales, where she completed the International Baccalaureate around 1991. She moved to New York in the early 1990s, studying anthropology at the New School for Social Research and art at Parsons School of Design before transferring to The Cooper Union, where she earned a BFA in 1996. She went on to Yale School of Art on a sculpture fellowship, completing an MFA in sculpture in 2000.

Her practice combines collage, painting, sculpture, film, and performance, working with found materials, magazine imagery, soil, and cast bronze to build hybrid female figures that speak to migration, colonial history, the body, and diasporic identity. She lives and works between New York and Nairobi.

Mutu's institutional profile rose through a series of major solo exhibitions and commissions: a 2010 show at Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin coincided with her selection as Deutsche Bank's Artist of the Year, and a 2013 exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, "A Fantastic Journey," surveyed her work to date.
