Wes Lang

Wes Lang was born in 1972 in Chatham, New Jersey. He did not attend art school and describes himself as totally self-taught. After finishing high school he moved toward a career in art directly, developing his skills informally through work as an art handler at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and through an apprenticeship in a tattoo shop, alongside sustained self-study of art history. His visual language draws on American iconography: skulls, flags, Native American motifs, and figures from country and jazz music.

Lang built his early career through New York galleries, including a long run of shows at Zieher Smith and its successor Zieher Smith and Horton, but by around 2010 he had stopped working with New York galleries and sold work primarily from his studio for roughly a decade. His public profile widened in 2013 through an association with Kanye West's visual output, and in 2014 he made his institutional debut with The Studio at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark.
