Will Cotton

Will Cotton was born in 1965 in Melrose, Massachusetts. He earned a BFA from Cooper Union in New York in 1987 and continued his training at the New York Academy of Art in 1988. He later served as a senior critic at the New York Academy of Art and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the school in 2012. He lives and works in New York City.

Cotton is best known for paintings of confectionery landscapes, gingerbread architecture, cotton-candy clouds, and cake-mountain terrain, often populated by figures rendered in a pinup-adjacent, rococo-inflected style. To paint these scenes from life, he builds elaborate sets and costumes in his studio using real sugar, candy, and other edible materials, then works from direct observation rather than invention alone. Critics and institutions have described his work as extending the language of figurative painting into unexpected, excess-themed territory, exploring temptation, indulgence, and artifice through a distinctly American, pop-adjacent lens.
