Willem Kalf

Willem Kalf was baptized in Rotterdam on 3 November 1619; no separate civil birth record survives, so his baptism date is conventionally treated as his birth date. Little is documented about his formal training. Britannica states that he was probably a pupil of the history painter Hendrick Gerritsz Pot and possibly also of Cornelis Saftleven, though modern scholars note that Kalf's early work does not obviously support the Pot relationship. At least one other secondary account proposes that he trained in the studio of Francois Rijckhals, possibly in Middelburg. None of these apprenticeships carry surviving contracts or firm dates, so they remain probable rather than documented.

By the early 1640s Kalf had left Rotterdam for Paris, where he is documented in 1642 and appears to have remained until around 1646. It was in this Paris period that he began developing the small kitchen and pantry still lifes that led, after his return to the Netherlands, toward the grander pronkstilleven for which he became known. Sources place his marriage to Cornelia Pluvier van Vollenhove in 1651; accounts differ on whether he moved directly to Amsterdam that year or first to Hoorn before settling permanently in Amsterdam, where he spent the rest of his career. He died in Amsterdam on 31 July 1693.

Kalf's reputation as a painter of exceptional refinement dates to his own lifetime and has held up consistently since. A more fully documented data point is the still life Still Life with Roemer, Orange, Peach, and Lemons in a Wanli Bowl, on a Tabletop Draped with an Oriental Rug, which sold for USD 151,200 at Christie's in 2013 and then resold for USD 61,600 at Christie's in Paris on 11 June 2026, against a pre-sale estimate of EUR 50,000 to 70,000. That resale illustrates how volatile individual results can be for an artist whose auction supply is small and infrequent.

Kalf is a deceased Old Master with no gallery or estate representation in the contemporary sense; his paintings circulate through major auction houses and specialist Old Master dealers rather than through a contemporary gallery program.
