William Coldstream

William Menzies Coldstream was born on 28 February 1908 in Belford, Northumberland, England, and was privately educated. He attempted to enter medical school but failed to matriculate, and in 1926 enrolled instead at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, studying until 1929.

In 1937 Coldstream co-founded the Euston Road School with Claude Rogers and Victor Pasmore, a teaching studio and loose grouping of painters committed to a measured, observational approach to figuration, often using plumb lines and careful sighting marks visible in the finished paintings. He taught at Camberwell School of Art before the Second World War and was appointed Slade Professor of Fine Art at University College London in 1949, a post he held until his retirement in 1975. He was also a trustee of the National Gallery and of the Tate Gallery.

From 1958 to 1971 Coldstream chaired the National Advisory Council on Art Education, and the reports issued under his name, commonly called the Coldstream Reports, led to the creation of the Diploma in Art and Design, which was given a status equivalent to a university degree. He was appointed CBE in 1952, knighted in 1956, and received the Sir Misha Black Medal in 1978 for his contribution to design education. After some years of ill health, he died on 18 February 1987 at the Royal Homeopathic Hospital in London.

Coldstream's reputation rests as much on institutional standing as on criticism of individual paintings. As a co-founder of the Euston Road School, Slade Professor for more than two decades, and chair of the national council whose 1961 report reshaped British art school qualifications, he is treated by museums and historians as a central administrator and teacher of twentieth-century British realism as much as a painter in his own right. The Tate mounted a major retrospective of his work in 1990, three years after his death, affirming his standing within the national collection.
